This book has all the essential elements of a great story. Readers will be captivated from the opening pages, as they read of the horrific act of arson against a church filled with black worshippers. As the story shifts to the present day, the author begins to highlight the feelings of unrest that hover over this small town. Since the crime was never solved and the perpetrators remain free, the wounds of the past have not healed. Now, over thirty years later, pieces of the puzzle come together as if by an unseen hand.

There is a large cast of characters, which are introduced slowly and with purpose. As the story progresses, the reader will see how each one of these people enters into a different facet of the story. Most impressive was the way the author tied them all together at the end for a stunning finish.

The town's setting was an integral part of the story and the reader will be able to get a sense of the tension and power struggles that come into play. While solving the arson case is the primary plot line, there are several angles that the reader will have to explore first. Legal issues, undercover financial dealings, and shady politics make up some of the sub-plots and are cleverly incorporated into the main theme. There is even a romantic twist that softens the tale and reminds readers of the power of love.

The author deftly weaves the past into the present. There is a wonderful sense of suspense as well as a subtle touch of the spiritual throughout the book.

The Preacher speaks well of the writing talent of Robert James Allison!
